So my husband has dreams about little Lorna all the time. He’s holding her and cuddling her and loving the feel of rocking her. I get my first dream… I’m in a public restroom and Lorna must be about one year old. For some unknown reason I think that since public restrooms are so safe and sanitary that it would be okay for me to leave Lorna alone while I do my business in the stall by myself. When I come out Lorna is gone. I tear through the store screaming her name; by age one they are old enough to respond right? I find her in the front of the store, face pressed against the glass door sobbing - making the most painful and heartbreaking noise I’ve ever heard. I woke up crying. What the hell?!? Darren is apparently going to be the gentle father, and I’m giving Lorna therapy topics before she’s conceived.

The dream was so real. I held Lorna and talked to her and left her in a freaking bathroom by herself. I don't dream much and when I do I quickly forget or don't think much of it but this one is sticking with me so decided to do a little reading. There is a book called "Dreamers Dictionary" that breaks dreams into four types and identifies dream symbols in alphabetical order.

I'm a little confused by the categories because I seem to fit three of the four. The four categories are Release Dreams, Message Dreams, Prophetic / Telepathic Dreams, and Lucid Dreams.

Release dreams are pretty much how they sound. A release of emotion or stress. Well... I woke up crying and I did get some exercise as I ran through the store.

Message dreams are direct communication from your subconscious. There is a sequence of events with distinct characters, detail, color and texture. This dream type seems to produce the most realistic of dreams.

Prophetic / Telepathic dreams are a little creepier as they predict the unknown present and future. I'm hoping this dream wasn't prophetic (predicting future events) cause I'm really going to suck at parenting if it is. Maybe I was dreaming about something the babysitter is going to do. That's just one more item for nanny the Q and A. How many languages do you speak? When did you last update your CPR certification? What would you do with Lorna if you had to use a public restroom?

Of course the one type I would welcome, lucid dreams, it is not. Lucid dreams are typically the ones you have on the snooze cycle. It's usually something impossible as you walk the fine line of consciousness and sleep and you can usually console yourself with the knowledge that you are dreaming. Sometimes you can even take control of the dream and spin it however you choose. Here's a website that offers a free e-book on how to create lucid dreams.

As for the symbols I wasn't sure what I was looking for so I just went through the whole alphabet. If you'd like to read the entire list here's a hubber that has copied it down for us.

Acid - Ok, so this wasn't in my dream but I think it's worth mentioning. Anything to do with acid is apparently a warning. Acid??? Like what kind of acid? Battery acid, amino acids, acid reflux? Maybe LSD but then are you taking it or just playing with sugar cubes?

Agony - This one was definitely present. Bonus! The greater the agony? The greater the coming joy. Read into that what you will.

Baby - I don't know about this one because she wasn't really a baby anymore and toddler isn't one of the options. If she does fall under the "baby" category then it's a good thing she was adorable. Apparently if you dream about ugly babies then one of your friends are going to stab you in the back. Wait a minute! I thought these were dream symbols not horoscopes.

Discover - Maybe "found" if more appropriate but I like discover. If you discover someone in your dreams then apparently you are coming into an inheritance. I'm starting to like the idea of prophetic dreams.

Distress - You'll make a gain where you expected to take a loss. That settles it I'm not weight in tonight. My weight watchers crew will just have to harass our instructor on their own.

Future - Any dream that looks into the future, call CPS now, predicts sudden unexpected changes in your life. Well, yeah.

Screams - Since it was Lorna screaming this means I'm about to hear some distressing news. No word on what my yelling meant.

That's it. No secret meaning for public restrooms or negligent parenting.

Does size really matter?

  • It's just right.
  • It needs to be longer.
  • It needs to be shorter.
